What is the new ITQ? |
|
| |
The new ITQs are a suite of vocationally related qualifications developed around a flexible framework. Unlike the NVQs these qualifications replace, the new ITQs can be delivered in a college setting as well as in the workplace. The ITQs are on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). |
|
| |
The Benefits and Flexibility of the new ITQs |
|
| |
- These qualifications have been developed in line with relevant National Occupational Standards, ensuring they meet the needs of employers. The focus is on building up the skills needed through selection of appropriate units.
- The ITQs are built up of a number of units, which can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual learner and / or employer. This allows learning to be delivered in small bite-sized pieces.
- The large number of optional units available allows the learner to study topics which best meet their needs
- The inclusion of sector specific units allows centres to adapt the qualifications to meet specific learner and / or employer needs.
- Learners can complete additional units to progress them from the award through to the certificate and diploma if they wish. Credits can be carried forward between the qualification sizes for up to 3 years
- The ITQs allow for the recognition of prior achievement. Credits can be transferred, avoiding the requirement to repeat learning where appropriate.
- These qualifications allow learners to import existing QCF units and recognise exempt and equivalent units.
- The use of optional units allows different levels and sizes of qualification to be achieved. Spiky profiles are also permitted (within the rules of combination). This includes units at entry 3 – level 3.

Each unit has an option to study towards a ‘pre-work’ or ‘in work’ assessment making the qualification suitable for a range of learners.
Uniquely, the Ascentis qualification allows the learner to take the writing unit at the same level as the Speaking & Listening and Reading units, or at one level below.
Assessment

Assessments are available throughout the year and can be taken as and when learners are ready. Tutors can choose assessments appropriate to learners 'in work' or 'looking for work'.
Speaking & Listening is assessed through a tutor/ learner role play interview.
Reading is assessed through a test where learners respond to short answer and multiple choice questions on work related texts.
Writing is assessed through a written paper where learners answer an extended answer question.
Flexibility
Centres are provided with the option to write their own external assessments mapped to the assessment criteria. This means that assessments could be designed to meet the specific needs of large employers
